🗒️About
Last year, on the 30th anniversary of the Candelária massacre in Brazil, I wrote a critical essay reflecting on how violence is erased from public memory. This song revisits some of those reflections — the silence, the staged forgetting, the way streets are renamed and walls repainted as if nothing ever happened. “Nothing Happened Here” doesn’t aim to retell history, but to expose the strategies used to bury it.

🎙️Lyrics
The signs were removed overnight
No paint on the walls
No trace in the soil
The wind was clean, like it had been coached
The trucks came early
No lights, no sound
Just tires folding earth
And boots too new for war
Children stayed indoors
Windows watched, curtains did not
No photos were taken
The men wore no names
They left behind piles
Not bodies; piles
“The piles reached toward the sky, nameless mounds beneath a blank horizon. Shadows stretched longer, heavier, like questions left unasked. A teacher tried to write it down the names. The chalk cracked before the first word”
Nothing happened here
Nothing burned
No one begged
No one bled
There’s no reason to remember
But the drain still held something dark
Uniforms changed
But the eyes gave them away
They repainted the gates
With numbers instead of names
One boy tried to speak
Now his desk is always empty
And no one asks
“Os nomes foram esquecidos sob o asfalto. Seis camadas de concreto por cima.”
“Cada placa carimbada dizia: ‘nada aqui’. A cada dez metros… Até ninguém mais saber apontar onde foi”
Nothing happened here
No fires
No flags
No names
Nothing left
To grieve
Or believe
Nothing
Nothing
ouooohhhhhhhh ooooooo
